Discovering the New Features in Photoshop
Photoshop has existed for decades, but over the years, the program has grown and expanded. At its start, it covered just image editing. Now it is one of the most comprehensive image-editing packages on the market.
Here are some of the new features that Photoshop offers today:
Layer-based editing system. To make changes to your image, you build up layers. Each layer has a color that’s selected, as seen in Figure 14-1. The original image is at the bottom and this shows the top layer. Each layer can be turned on or off to control how much of the original image gets placed on top of the next layer.
Document Camera. Through the Document Camera, you can snap new images in with just one click, even if you don’t have a camera connected to your computer. You can adjust the exposure, white balance, and other settings, and then click the image to take it. You can set the settings as the camera is ready to snap the photo.

Dreamweaver inside Photoshop. Photoshop Elements includes the most advanced version of Photoshop’s Adobe Dreamweaver. This feature enables you to create and design web pages. The program includes all the page-building functions, such as background, frames, layering, and text. Check out the Resources section at the back of this book for more about the web design program.
Transform. You can use this tool to distort, rotate, and resize an image. You can also use it to sharpen images and add sparkle.
Figure 14-2 shows an image resized and rotated with the Transform tool.
Content Aware Fill. This tool enables you to fill in areas of an image with the information in the surrounding pixels. This enables you to fill in areas of an image that match the shape of an object, such as a person’s face or an animal’s tail.
Enhance. With the Enhance feature, you can add more variety to an image through the addition of a Gradient Map. You can add things like a halo effect, which makes the border glow, or a soft, scattered drop shadow. The tool adds depth to an

2. Choose the right version
Elements 12 is the latest version of the program, and it’s still good, but there are other versions to consider.
These include:
• Photoshop Elements 13
• Photoshop Elements 14
• Photoshop Elements 15
Elements 12 is similar to Elements 10, but it runs a bit faster and has many of the tools that Photoshop users are accustomed to, like crop, straighten, rotate, sharpen, add and remove people, remove backgrounds, and more.
Elements 13 is very similar to Elements 12, and Elements 14 is similar to Elements 12.
If you’re choosing an entry-level version, Elements 15 is the one for you. It has more to do with games and other hobbies than photography. The cost of the program is similar to Elements 14, but you can buy it in a bundle with Elements 14, which also includes Elements 12.
I recommend you buy the bundle because you’re getting a great deal and you’ll save money on your software.
But if you need Photoshop Elements 13 for your business, go for it. And if you need Elements 14 or 15, see if you can get the version with Elements 12 included free or a reduced price.
One more thing before you buy: Before you buy any version, make sure it includes all the features you’ll use and that you’ll need to be a professional photographer.
3. Learn your way around
As you become more familiar with Elements, you’ll find that it can do pretty much everything you need.
But for now, here are some other suggestions.

How to properly edit the “Application Info” attribute in Xcode 4
When I go to build settings in Xcode4 and drill down to the “User-Defined Runtime Attribute” section, I only see “application-information”, “application-non-bundle-info” and “application-bundle-identifier”. The “application-bundle-identifier” is obviously the problem – I would rather use the longer user-defined string shown below than the default “com.mycompany.myapp.A” that is provided by default by Xcode4.
I believe I can correct this in two steps:
Migrate the “application-bundle-identifier” entry to a custom one and specify that one in the “Other C Flags” in Build Settings.
Fix the “application-non-bundle-info” entry in the same way. This one is a bit trickier, as it appears that the build system uses it to populate the launch image for the app – which would require setting a “launch-images-search-path” attribute.

Is this the right approach?
Does Xcode4 provide support for this?
What values should I provide to those attributes to be safe?
If I do this properly, what are the implications of changing the “application-bundle-identifier” from the default (which I see on every app in the appstore)?

Here are some files to look at, /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/libexec/ApplicationIcon_watchkit
The file for the iOS4 icon set is application.iconset, look at the “DefaultIcon” or “[email protected]” parts. You can change those in the plist file.
iPhoneOS.platform is the real directory, so it will be found with a “cd” command. You can watch where the file gets copied in terminal with “ls -l”
And you should be able to open it with a text editor, copy the plist file over, rename it (or leave the default name), and edit it, then save and quit.
It’s not documented in one of the Apple Info docs, but it’s all over the internet.
