The lightweight green poplin shorts hung loosely on his flaccid frame. The cotton t-shirt hung a couple of inches longer and was stained with perspiration, making the long sleeves droop off his arms.
He barely noticed the reek of his own body as he parked himself in the booth set just outside of the wooden doors of a café erected out of plywood along the paved, lake shore. Enormous pans of biscuits, eggs, sausage, and the like were laid out on opposite sides of the small room.
Staring at the menu, he wondered how much he had to eat. Another forty-five minutes of walking from the base to here had almost evaporated any memories of carb-loading he had by his regular meals.
A toothless old woman with bright eyes greeted him and handed him a cardboard menu. “Hope you’re hungry.”
Justin nodded and without conscious thought gestured for her to go.
With a growing certainty in his voice he realized that this place wasn’t a trap. “Get out of my sight, now! I’ve had a hell of a lot of shit tonight and I don’t want you here or anywhere near me or I will shoot you!”
Her eyes wandered from him to her menu and back to him. “You’re hurting,” she said simply.
On impulse, he replied, “Now you tell me.”
“I’ll get you some breakfast. Eggs and sausage and hangover biscuit if you’d like.”
Gleefully, the old woman filled a plate, pancake with sausage and eggs on the side.
The aroma of fried food, charcoal smoke, and coffee caught in his nose and his stomach growled. When the item came, it was greasy, but he was hungry and before he could stop himself, he was chewing.
“What the hell?!” he exclaimed, staring at the plate.
The old woman gestured broadly with her free hand towards the offending food.
“It’s bad, huh?”
