A South Carolina woman could be the face of a life-saving medical study.
Megan Summerville, 19, is blind and has a rare genetic condition called Waardenburg syndrome, which can cause vision problems and heart issues. It’s something she had no control over and she thinks it’s unfair.
“It’s really unfortunate,” Summerville told NBC News when asked about her condition. “I can’t really control what’s happening to my body and that makes me feel pretty helpless.”
Summerville has been an official participant in the Nationwide Multicenter Study of Hydroxyurea in Newborns with Pore-Closing Syndrome. Pore-Closing Syndrome is another name for Waardenburg syndrome.

Summerville’s mother, Stephanie Summerville, was part of the initial study that showed hydroxyurea, a drug which stops production of a necessary protein called myelin, can be helpful in treating Pore-Closing syndrome.
Her daughter, Megan, also is part of the study.
“It’s such a wonderful disease and such a terrible disease,” Stephanie Summerville told NBC News of Waardenburg Syndrome. “Because it is a genetic disorder, I never would have expected it to effect my daughter.”

The study was created to look at hydroxyurea’s effect on two groups of babies — those with Waardenburg syndrome and those with a similar condition, Pore-Closing syndrome. It is only being offered to parents who have a baby at birth who is either diagnosed with one of the two conditions and at least one parent is a part of the study.
As of April 2015, about 515 babies have been born with one of the two conditions in the U.S., and about half of them have been approached to be part of the study. Of those, about 120 babies have been enrolled.
