Building and growing a law firm requires a lot of work and is never easy.

It involves overseeing and managing the general operations, taking care of the financials, and the promotion of the firm and services. All while fee earning.

Aside from using traditional marketing techniques, you are now presented with new opportunities in digital marketing that you can take advantage of.

If your law firm has a website, that’s a great start. But your website alone might not be enough to generate new clients online. You need to make your website visible.

This is where search engine optimisation (SEO) comes into play.

But how do you warrant SEO’s effectiveness? More importantly, how do you use it to grow your business?

What does SEO have to do with law firm growth?

Due to the high accessibility of fast internet, users expect to find answers to their questions immediately, typically searched for on Google

To meet their customers’ needs, Google attempts to serve them with the most relevant and credible websites with good user experience (UX) to ensure they continue to use the search engine. 

So, as there are thousands of relevant law firm websites competing on Google, how does your firm’s website secure a top spot on the SERPs? This is where SEO comes in to help.

Combining SEO with other website improvements can give your firm a chance of not only appearing on the SERPs, but also climbing the top rankings.

This in turn can lead to more visitors to your website, which in turn creates more enquires, more clients and ultimately growing your business.

What every law firm’s SEO strategy must include?

Writing content plays a big part in legal SEO.

Producing helpful content will not only present you as the leader of your niche area to prospective clients, it will also allow you to place a wider range of keywords on your site, which will subsequently improve your SEO.

Writing web content will also give you good PR, as sharing educational and helpful content can create a good impression.

But it’s not the only thing. SEO also involves using a variety of qualitative content principles and technical improvements to increase your online traffic and rankings on the SERPs.

Without getting into too much technical detail, we outline some of the SEO strategy components below that you need to cover to ensure your content ranks on Google and helps your business grow:

Target relevant keywords and write original legal content

Keywords are individual words and phrases searched for on Google, for example, ‘personal injury compensation claim’ or ‘divorce solicitor in London’.

To be able to rank for keywords, you need to ensure you include the right amount of them in the right places. This means that, at the very least, they need to be present in your page titles, headings and the body of the text.

The more focused your copy is on a single topic, the better. Note that Google uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to understand search queries. The AI is clever but it might get confused if you try to cover too many topics on the same page.

Do make sure you write original texts. If you take content from another site, Google might simply rank the original page instead of yours. Find out more about this.

Do your keyword research and keep an eye on the changes Google is implementing. If you keep up, you will be rewarded with increased visibility and resulting traffic.

Craft your metadata

Metadata is almost like your office front.

The meta title is the first thing a Google user will see. Then, most likely, they will see your meta description.

Whether a prospective client will click on the link to your website or not, depends on how well they respond to your metadata.

Google’s program constantly scans through websites to make sense of the pages and then match them with people’s search queries. By including keywords in your metadata, you will highlight the relevance of your law firm’s page.

Obtain good backlinks

Backlinks (other websites linking back to your website) are important for SEO. They essentially signal to Google that others vouch for the content on your law firm’s website.

For law firms, the Law Society Directory and the SRA’s Solicitors Register make great backlinks because they are trustworthy, popular and high-authority websites.

On the opposite end you don’t want links from spam / unreliable websites that Google doesn’t like and doesn’t want to serve to its users.

Earning good backlinks can have a positive effect on your website’s ranking position and thus search visibility.

You can gain backlinks to your law firm’s website by writing engaging content.

And the more closely you match your prospects’ search intent, the more likely others will also reference your website.

If you are presented with opportunities to guest blog, take them. If you can, create shareable content (such as videos and infographics) and use industry contacts and social media to share it.

It is also worth checking and removing any untrustworthy backlinks from your own website to improve your online authority score.

The technical side of your law firm’s website

Having a technically sound website can make all the difference in SEO results.

If, for instance, your website’s information architecture (IA) and navigation are complicated, and your UX isn’t accessible, visitors may struggle to navigate and read your website. So you need to make sure these are in tip-top shape.

Moreover, as more than a half of the world’s online traffic is now generated by mobile devices, mobile-friendliness matters more than ever. For good SEO results, it’s important to have a mobile-ready site.

To secure high rankings on the SERPs, you also need to make sure that your website loads quickly. Ideally in 2.5 seconds or less. Anything longer than that could result in lower rankings.

Also, don’t forget the most basic foundations of your site. Ensure all of your page links (URLs) are easy to read and that your website is safe and secure.

This, combined with good SEO practices. will help you gain higher website rankings and subsequently grow your law firm. 

Use the free Google tools to monitor your website

There are different tools available out there to help you track your SEO and website performance.

The following are some of the most valuable free tools you can use to help ensure you get the most out of your SEO and support your law firm’s growth.

Page Speed Insights

Page Speed Insights is a great tool for testing your law firm’s website’s overall performance. 

It is simple enough, giving you a score out of 100 based on several optimisation best practices and highlighting any problem spots.

The tool will help you ensure compliance with Google’s guidelines which can result in higher rankings. 

Google Analytics and Search Console

Google Analytics and Search Console can collect and present enormous amounts of helpful data about your law firm’s website. 

Some of the most helpful information they can provide you with include insights into how many people visit your site every day, which pages get the most views, and which search queries your website appears for. 

Analysing this data can give you a better idea as to whether your website/SEO is generating any return on investment (ROI). 

Keyword Planner

In respect of keyword tools, there are various free and paid keyword tools available on the internet. Without a shadow of a doubt, however, Google’s free Keyword Planner remains a leader among them. 

There are a few reasons to use this tool; the main one being the free keyword research feature which can be used to inspire new pages and inform you whether the keywords you want to target ever get searched on Google.

Mobile-Friendly Test

This is one of the simplest tools created by Google. 

The Mobile-Friendly Test is a test site you can use right now to see if your website is mobile friendly.

Google My Business

When it comes to local search, the value of Google My Business listing can’t be understated.

Google My Business contains a short version of everything a prospective client needs to know about a business, including the URL to its website.

Create a profile and optimise it to give your law firm the best opportunity to show for local searches.

In the Soop: Friendcation (JTCB, Disney+, Viu) is back with its second day of the holiday. Now that all the mates have arrived, we witness a changing dynamic – or is it because they’ve all had a good sleep?

Winter 2022, 4 days and 3 nights in Goseong, Gangwon-do, Korea.

Unwitting Cast (and their group-presumed roles):

  • Park Seo-joon (Captain Marvel 2: The Marvels, Itaewon Class) – the father and emotional anchor
  • Park Hyung-sik (Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Suits, Juror 8) – the kind mom, a little softer than dad
  • Choi Woo-shik (Parasite, Our Beloved Summer, Time to Hunt) – the trustworthy older son, leader of the kids
  • Kwon Sung-hwan (rapper/singer/producer Peakboy known for Gin&Tonic and last summer’s Gyopo Hairstyle) – the wild youngest daughter, always pumped up
  • Kim Taehyung (BTS’ V, and also appeared in Hwarang, BTS In The Soop) – the cute & mischievous youngest sibling

See our previous stories 1 and 2 for more background on this group of friends.

The episode starts with a recap followed by the final strands of Day 1. When Choi Woo-shik arrives, they rush to catch up, with Taehyung dragging him to get changed into their uniform, including matching socks.

They write his nickname on his top then get to the eating. If we were unsure last week, it’s now confirmed. This is definitely an eating show.

On Day 2, we learn that Park Hyung-sik has arrived at some point with enough orientation to get him into his special PJs. He and Woo-shik test the steamed buns then wake the cats.

After some greetings, they decide to rest a bit more, four piled into Seo-joon’s bed. But then really do go back to sleep for another hour.

Dad Seo-joon eventually rises, getting breakfast started. The tteokguk (rice cake soup) – a new year tradition – really does look pretty appetising. Sung-hwan gathers everyone up with warnings of emergencies.

But it seems like this is his method of kickstart. Do you hear a wolf cry? No one minds as breakfast is on display and they all dig in. Afterwards, Sung-hwan rewards them with pour-over coffee.

Random conversation erupts as they realise no one among the group has ‘double’ eyelids, a desirable beauty feature in Asia. That’s when the much-previewed conversation about Taehyung’s visuals kicks in, as they’re sure he must have the attribute. But after playing with his face, they concur. It’s a ‘mono-eyelid’ group.

They get ready for the activity of the day – deep sea fishing. Mom Hyung-sik applies seas-sick patches behind their ears. On the way, they laugh, they sing, they talk about their friendship rings – a ring each of the five wears.

At last on the crew-manned boat, they head out into the wild rolling waters. It looks pretty rough, tossing them about the cabin, but they eventually get out on deck, each happily catching a string of halibut. Hyung-sik’s exclamations keep everyone energised as the keepers pile up on deck.

Back at their triangle, they drag in more groceries and sample the new purple steamed buns as well as their fresh catch. The halibut is prepared to be eaten ‘raw with bones’ and they marvel at the sweetness.

Woo-shik proceeds in making terrible Dad jokes where even Hyung-sik can’t help him. But finally, Taehyung gives in and laughs for him. Then guess what? Yes, it’s nap time. After all, they’ve had to earn lunch.

It’s dark when they arise but the perfect time for an indoor swim in their private pool. Much to everyone’s amusement, Sung-hwan wears something that looks like a wetsuit, clearly expecting a more dramatic experience.

Competing to hold their breath underwater, there’s lots of laughter. Before they’ve exited, there’s already a plan for the next feed coming together.

Seo-joon heads to his self-designated spot as the rest work on a fire. Woo-shik then prepares a beer-can chicken. It’s a little disconcerting as they proceed to personify the chicken. But apart from that, it looks like it has potential. Taehyung maintains his reputation as Noodle Master and before long they’re ready for another appetising dinner.

They relax around the fire and talk about how they may never get the opportunity to travel like this again, noting it’s been three+ years since their last one together. This leads to the chat about how they become a party of five.

As the story goes, Seo-joon already knew Sung-hwan and Woo-shik. He, Hyung-sik and Taehyung became friends during Hwarang (2016), Seo-joon claiming it’s because they were so friendly. But how did the two friend groups intersect?

Online gaming is the answer. Team gaming led them to want to meet each other, which they finally did in 2018. Sung-hwan is super curious as to why Taehyung and Hyung-sik would want to meet them – he forced you, right? Seconding, Woo-shik notes that he’s typically shy around people he doesn’t know.

Taehyung explains that after Seo-joon described Woo-shik and Sung-hwan as his close friends, they were keen to meet IRL, having already connected over gaming. They all tease Hyung-sik for his online ‘play to win’ attitude, so different to his day-to-day personality. But he’s the one who assures they would have found each other as mates even without the game – intimating fate.

They start talking about Woo-shik’s drama, commenting on his cuteness. He emphasises that that’s not the way it is. He wasn’t aiming for cute. Let the eye-rolling begin.

He says he’s over being cute, now keen for ‘cool’ roles like the ones offered to Seo-joon. Noting he’d like to bulk up, he jokes then he’ll be able to steal some of Seo-joon’s ad deals.

Taehyung suggests that Hyung-sik was able to get ‘cool’ roles after completing his military service. No, the other disagree – he’s always been cool. They talk of being intimidated by his looks upon meeting. Taehyung uses it to fish for compliments and they all chuckle at their youngest.

Then they dig into Taehyung as part of the BTS experience, noting their surprise upon seeing him perform. Sung-hwan pretty much confesses to a heart flutter seeing him on stage. They tell Taehyung they can’t praise him too much or things could get awkward but he does not seem at all worried.

They continue discussing live performances and the energy created by a live audience. Seo-joon and Woo-shik sound sincerely envious of the experience. They again marvel at the group as a whole and their differing careers.

After their heart-to-heart, Sung-hwan re-raises the energy once again creating a multi-hued aurora fire. They shout joyfully and take pictures which of course leads to sparklers.

Someone’s spark manages to set Woo-shik’s coat on fire but it’s quickly snuffed. These millionaires then confer over putting tape on the hole vs retiring the 5-year-old coat. Surely it’s great as a memory with hole?

They wrap the chapter with a plan to watch Woo-shik’s current drama later that evening. He does not seem keen.


The Episode Review

It doesn’t take long to catch on to the amiability and sincerity of this group. And to understand how they’ve been attributed to their ‘family’ roles. Hyung-sik is ridiculously sweet with an easy laugh that gets everyone chuckling. I wouldn’t have picked him to be the ‘energy’ of the group, but it seems like it today, even though he’s fresh from a set.

Woo-shik fails at Dad jokes with an engaging awkwardness where the others can’t hold back their smiles. Seo-joon leads but says very little and Taehyung basks in the older guys’ attention. Sung-hwan initiates a lot of the teasing but he’s the one who digs into the emotional pieces too.

I shake my head at several rounds of napping, but hey – this is the purpose of a holiday. You do whatever you want, no matter who’s watching. On Day 2, beyond the resting, we are treated to a bit of their dynamic or at least the day’s dynamic. And by the end, even some honest assertions on how and why they became such a tight group, including what they like about each other.

Meanwhile, Park Seo-joon has unwittingly sealed himself as ‘husband’ material, cooking some fabulous-looking dishes. And by the pace of consumption, it appears they’re not just well-plated but tasty as well.

Did you imagine there’d be a bit more drinking? Perhaps that happens off-screen? Or maybe they don’t need it, focusing instead on treasuring the moment. Or possibly it’s yet to come in the next instalment…

Best moments today? While fishing was fun and the food looked great, it’s the campfire where the guys talk about themselves and each other, sharing plenty of insight and lots of laughs. Friendship at its best. Road trip anyone?
