CBS is planning to remake James Corden’s long-running Sky game show, A League Of Their Own, and will turn to the late night host for help tweaking it for U.S. audiences. Series will be produced by Fulwell 73, which includes Corden as a partner, and CPL Productions, creator of the UK format.
Food Network has begun production on a six-episode reboot of Food Network Challenge, which ran from 2005 to 2011. Hosted by Ian Ziering (Sharknado), series pits the country’s top cake makers, bakers and sugar artists against each other in two rounds of theme battles. The season premiere will celebrate holiday film A Christmas Story, and is slated to air on Monday, December 23.
The National Academy of TV Arts and Sciences announced that primetime offshoots of daytime programs will now compete in the Daytime Emmy Awards. The new rule looks to clarify the difference between daytime and primetime Emmy eligibility.
Catherine Herridge is joining CBS News as a senior investigative correspondent, this month. Herridge, who had been with Fox News since its 1996 launch, will cover national security and intelligence issues and report original investigations.
Facebook is suing Israeli mobile surveillance firm NSO Group for allegedly hacking WhatsApp earlier this year. The tech giant is accusing NSO of installing malware on the phones of some 1,400 WhatsApp users, includig at least 100 civically prominent figures. “This should serve as a wake-up call for technology companies, governments and all internet users,” WhatsApp’s head Will Cathcart wrote in op-ed in The Washington Post.
Carrie Underwood will team with Ryan Seacrest as guest co-host of Live with Kelly and Ryan on Friday, November 8. The longtime friends met on American Idol in 2005, when Underwood won the show’s fourth season.

Microsoft’s computer game, Minesweeper, is being reworked as a TV competition series. The project, in the works via a deal with OBB Pictures, will feature strategy with the addition of teamwork and athleticism. OBB has already begun looking for a host.
Quibi ordered The Now from Peter and Bobby Farrelly and Anonymous Content. Dave Franco is set to lead the comedy, which is being written by Peter Farrelly (Green Book), Steve Leff (The Ranch) and Pete Jones (Hall Pass). The Now explores what makes life worth living, focusing on Ed Poole (Franco), who finds clarity when a secret from his past has seemingly destroyed his future.
Freemantle is expanding into the scripted space with a global agreement and an equity investment deal in production company The Immigrant. It marks Freemantle’s first major equity investment in the Latinx and Hispanic scripted market. BRON Ventures will also invest in The Immigrant, acquiring a minority stake.
NBC is developing Wellsville, a drama inspired by author H.G. Wells’ works, from writer George Northy (Charmed), Fox Entertainment’s SideCar Content Accelerator and Universal TV, according to Deadline. Series centers on Ellie, a young scientist lured to a secluded island under the pretense of curing her terminally ill mother, who soon discovers there is more to the island and its inhabitants than it seems.
Fox greenlit Building Security, from SNL vet Steve Koren, 3 Arts Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV. Workplace comedy, written by Koren, centers on a group of hardworking but extremely ill-equipped men and women who serve a commercial office building’s residents.
Safehouse Pictures inked a two-year first-look TV deal with Legendary Television Studio. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell’s company, which produces WGN’s Underground, previously had an overall television deal with Warner Bros.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Man vs. Bear premieres Wednesday, December 4 at 9p on Discovery. The new competition series pits humans against powerful grizzlies to test the limits of strength, speed and stamina.
TLC invites viewers to see what it’s like to unplug in new six-part series, Welcome to Plathville, premiering Tuesday, November 5 at 10p. Reality show centers on parents Kim and Barry Plath and their brood of nine, who live remotely in rural Georgia and have never had soda, don’t know who Spider-Man or Tom Brady is, and have never watched TV.

Netflix is about to delve into the scripted podcast format, reports Variety. The Only Podcast Left is set in the world of the streamer’s post-apocalyptic series Daybreak, with showrunner and head writer Aron Coleite onboard as EP. Six-episode narrative is designed as a complement to the main show.
Tenderfoot TV’s horror anthology, Radio Rental, bowed on Thursday with a surprise guest: Rainn Wilson. The Office star joined the true crime podcast creator and host, Payne Lindsey.

Culinary fans can stream live cooking classes via the Food Network Kitchen app. The line-up of classes features two-way interaction allowing users to communicate in real-time with the net’s experts, including Giada De Laurentiis and others.
Verizon Media and MGM Resorts International struck an exclusive multiyear partnership between Yahoo! Sports and BetMGM, an interactive gambling application. Integration is expected to take place by the end of November. In addition to their digital endeavors, the two entities are planning to create collaborative content experiences and live event for the sports fan.
Gusto Worldwide Media teamed with Wavefront TV to launch Gusto TV’s connected television advertising platform. Wavefront TV will manage Gusto’s OTT growth as it expands it streaming presence in the U.S, and will work with video ad management platform Beachfront to deploy ads across Gusto TV’s growing OTT television network.

Google announced lead form extensions to help advertisers capture leads from their search advertising text campaigns. The extensions, on Search for mobile, simplify the process of filling out forms for consumers who want more information about a company’s products and services.
In the third quarter of 2019, marketers spent 115% more on ecommerce compared to a year ago. The investments were mostly made on Amazon, according to Marin Software’s Q3 2019 Digital Advertising Benchmark Report. The report shows a seasonal leap in ecommerce advertising and mobile search among brands that buy media on its platform. That leap is largely attributed to Amazon Advertising and Prime Day. The cost per ecommerce click rose 10.5% compared with the second quarter of 2019. Retailers, in total, spent 40% of their budgets on Shopping ads, while the number of clicks on Shopping ads rose 14% quarter-over-quarter. |
