Why Her? aka Why Oh Soo-jae? – as the Korean title reads, opens to an intense plotline. From the get-go, viewers are introduced to a prickly Oh Soo-jae (Seo Hyun-jin) who makes you wonder if she is worth rooting for! Throughout the 16 episodes, the show chronicles her eventful journey as a lawyer and a law professor. Becoming a successful lawyer has not come for free. Soo-jae has many secrets hidden. As the show progresses, each secret unravels a newer side to Soo-jae. Sometimes formidable, sometimes vulnerable, as a viewer, you end up asking Why Her? both in angst and worry!
The story begins with a promise to be an intense watch but, it stumbles to hold your attention by the time you reach the middle. As Soo-jae battles sexism, sexual harassment, and abuse of justice, many plot lines become predictable. The story also seems stretched by almost two episodes, with repetitive mentions of two or three specific events. For a thriller to keep you invested, it is essential for the plot to hold on to an aspect of the reveal till the end. Why Her? fails to do that.
SEO HYUN-JIN AND HWANG IN-YOUP PERFORMANCE
Seo Hyun-jin grabs your undivided attention from the first scene itself. She makes Soo-jae her own with her impeccable performance. It is very rare for actors to leave you with the impression that it is difficult to hate or love them equally. Despite her questionable approach, she is impressive and keeps convincing you to root for the extremely flawed Soo-jae. From making a Viola Davis-inspired (How To Get Away With Murder?) dramatic entry into the law class to showing her emotional weak side, Hyun-jin delivers one of her best performances with Why Her!
Supporting her is Hwang In-youp, who plays Gong Chan, a law student. The actor finally gets moments to show his acting skills and explores a more complex character this time. He was earlier seen in Sound of Magic and True Beauty. It is refreshing and rewarding for In-youp to steal the scenes where his emotional side is highlighted. He plays a person who is wronged by the system and is back to reclaim his honour. Chan is devoted to Soo-jae (spoiler alert: because of their past connection), even as she continues to fail him.
Gong Chan is easily one of the characters you want to root for with no qualms. However, it sometimes felt infuriating to see his character being reduced to serve as a second fiddle to justify or make you feel sympathetic towards Soo-jae’s character.
WHAT COULD BE BETTER?
However, what doesn’t work is the inconsistency in legal recourse. The writers have conveniently disregarded the legal discourse in solving a case that revolves around the justice system. While in some scenes, you see inadmissible evidence being used to change the perspective of the case, in another it is the complete opposite. While a certain level of creative liberty is allowed, the inconsistency is what leaves you perplexed.
To call this drama a mystery romance would be misleading. Romance and chemistry are rather small and forgettable parts of the drama. What drives the drama is the performances and the chilling, uncomfortable silences in between that make you want to keep going till the very end.
