1970s
After leaving the U.S. Army, John Walker started working at the Evans & Sutherland company, which made computer-aided design tools. Walker’s new employer wanted to develop a new CAD system that was not tied to a particular computer, operating system, or business model. Walker designed an architecture based on a mainframe that was scalable to run in a network environment.
With the help of a systems analyst, Walker wrote a draft program, CAD/NOS, which he demoed at the 1977 American Society of Mechanical Engineers conference.
Following the initial success of the program, Evans & Sutherland integrated CAD/NOS into the company’s product line, but a new company—Autodesk—was already working on a computer-aided design program for the then-nascent personal computer market.
Development
Around 1979, Autodesk was researching a CAD program for IBM PC, competing with a number of other leading CAD programs including Alias-D and MasterCAD. The Autodesk team had some issues with the network programming model that CAD/NOS used, and it wasn’t clear that there would be a market for a personal computer CAD program.
