The DICE literature continues to spread the myth that the stock market is predictable. This week the Scoundrel Investor cites a paper which shows only that in the next four trading days, the market will be more volatile. This is hardly the same as showing that markets are stable.
The real reason markets are volatile, after all, is that when people buy or sell stocks they do not know what the next day will bring. And since they will be buying or selling based on their expectations of future price movements, they will also be selling if they expect prices to fall.
Volatility is a feature of markets which are real, not a feature of markets which are imaginary.
As for predicting the future, there is no reason to believe there is any way of doing so. If you asked people whether all the stocks had gone up or gone down, you would get an answer which would have less than a 50% probability of being correct. People do not and cannot know about the future.
We can only know the past, we can only infer the future. Yet people do not act on what they know is true but rather on what they think might be true, which is what they are uncertain about.
In the financial markets the stock market is assumed to be one of the most important predictors. Yet it is also the one market where people’s beliefs about the future cannot be verified through observation.
What we can observe is that the stock market currently behaves as if it thinks the Fed will reduce the Fed Funds rate by 1% at the end of this year. But we cannot determine whether that is true or not.
The logic is really simple, but hard to understand because it contradicts our intuition, which suggests that you could predict something just by knowing all the facts.
When the Fed suddenly starts lowering rates, it raises the market. But we cannot observe the market knowing that the Fed is about to lower rates.
That is because our observations are constrained by the fact that we can only observe the past. The only information we have about the future is what we

Escaping single quotes from a string inside of a string in the query string – MVC
For a multilanguage project I have a search engine, using MVC 5.
I want to make the search engine multilanguage, so the url looks like this:
For the search engine I use a viewmodel which contains several things like:
SearchText, SearchTitle, SearchContext, SearchTarget
I’m using JQuery to do the querystring manipulation, because the page is pretty big, but the part I can’t figure out how to do is:
I pass the search text to the querystring, but the way a singlequote was escaped, I can’t send the string as it is.
The string is: ‘{“SearchText”: “bengal”, “SearchTarget”: 2, “SearchContext”: “1”}’
It always returns an empty string in the querystring.
